India’s Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara will not return to the Sussex squad for next year’s County Championship as the English club has opted to release him to retain the services of Australia’s Daniel Hughes. Left-handed batsman Hughes will be available for all Championship and T20 Vitality Blast matches next season.

Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace said this

Cheteshwar Pujara played for Sussex for the third consecutive time in 2024. He played the first seven championship matches before Hughes’ return. Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace said in a statement released on the official website that ending the contract with Cheteshwar was not an easy task but Daniel fits the team according to our need and we are happy that he will be available for the entire next season.

Daniel Hughes has been performing well for some time and scored 560 runs at an average of 43.07 in the group stage of this year’s Blast, including five half-centuries. His highest score was 96 runs. He will be available to play in the remaining five matches of the County Championship in the current season. The Sussex club also announced that West Indies right-arm fast bowler Jaden Seals will play for this county team in the opening matches of the championship.

Played more than 100 test matches for India

Cheteshwar Pujara made his debut in Test cricket for India in the year 2010. After this, he scored 7195 runs in 103 Test matches for Team India, which includes 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He played an important role in helping India win the Test series on Australian soil. But due to poor form, he has been out of Team India since 2023. He played his last Test match against Australia.
