2010 Commonwealth Games were the best for India, these big records were made

India in Commonwealth Games: The year 2010 was the best event for India in the history of the Commonwealth Games so far. For the first time in these games held in New Delhi 12 years ago, India had won more than 100 medals. In the medal tally that year also, the Indian contingent was second only to Australia.

India won a total of 101 medals in Commonwealth Games 2010. These included 38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals. There were many sports events of the Commonwealth Games that year in which Indian players had created history. In gymnast, Ashish Kumar won silver and bronze here. This was the first time that India had won a medal in this Commonwealth event.

That year also in track and field, India got the gold share after 52 years. In 2010, Krishna Punia won gold in the women’s disc throw event after Milkha Singh won gold at the 1958 Cardiff Games. Silver and Bronze also went to India in this disc throw event. This was the first time that India had won all three medals in an event of the Commonwealth Games.

In the Commonwealth Games 2010, India had won 30 medals in the shooting event alone. It had 14 gold medals. Indian wrestlers had rocked in wrestling too. 19 out of 21 Indian wrestlers won medals, out of which 10 gold medals were also won. In this year’s Commonwealth Games, a total of 64 medals were won by men and 36 by women.

Geeta Phogat also created history in the same year. She became the first Indian female player to win wrestling gold in these games. Geeta’s sister Babita Phogat also won silver this year in the 51kg category. In table tennis, Sharad Kamal repeated his 2006 performance by winning gold in men’s doubles and silver in men’s team event.

Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal won gold in the women’s singles event on the last day of the Commonwealth Games 2010. This gold had taken India to the second place for the first time in the Commonwealth Games medal tally. With the help of this gold, India had overtaken England (37 gold) to get second place.
