Bad news for fans between IPL 2022, this veteran cricketer suddenly announced retirement

In the midst of the Indian Premier League, another New Zealand player has announced his retirement. Just a few days ago, the legendary batsman of the Kiwi team, Ross Taylor had said goodbye to cricket. Now New Zealand fast bowler Hamish Bennett has also announced his retirement.

New Zealand pacer Hamish Bennett on Tuesday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, deciding to end his 17-year-old professional career. Also said that the 2021-22 season will be his last. The 35-year-old has taken 43 wickets in 31 matches for New Zealand across all three formats and most recently featured in the T20I against Bangladesh last September.

Bennett made his international debut for New Zealand in 2010 in an ODI against Bangladesh and played his only Test match a month later against India in Ahmedabad.

The pacer was picked for the 2011 World Cup, but was sidelined after an injury, forcing him to undergo a major surgery the following year. The injury may have curtailed his career for New Zealand, but he remained a key member of the Canterbury and Wellington teams.

“When I started out as a young player bowling in the nets, I never dreamed that I would enjoy my career,” Bennett said in a statement issued by New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

He continued, “From Old Boys Timaru Cricket Club, who got me into cricket initially, Timaru Boys High School, South Canterbury Cricket, Canterbury Cricket, Cricket Wellington, and New Zealand Cricket as well as all the other great clubs I’ve joined Over the years I have played cricket here, they have all helped me achieve my cricketing dreams.

Overall, Bennett has taken 489 wickets in 265 home matches since his debut in 2005. In that time, she has won 12 domestic titles, including five Plunkett Shields, two Ford Trophy titles, four men’s Super Smash titles and one women’s Super Smash title as bowling coach for Wellington Blaze.

“I have been very fortunate to have worked and played with so many great players, captains and coaches and I want to thank each and every one of them for their support over the years,” the fast bowler said.
