Cricket In Commonwealth Games: Birmingham is just the beginning, ICC’s target is to make it to the Olympics

New Delhi. Women cricketers will get a chance to play in a multi-sport event for the first time. When cricket returns to the Commonwealth Games after 24 years, this game will try to attract the attention of people at the global level as well. The Commonwealth includes the top cricket playing nations and the sport will return at the Birmingham Games. Cricket was included in the Commonwealth Games only once in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur. Then male cricketers took part in these games. The International Cricket Council (ICC), which is engaged in the exercise of including cricket in the Olympics 2028, expects women’s cricket to have a good success in Birmingham, which will strengthen its claim to include the sport in the Los Angeles Olympics.

The number of people of Indian and Pakistani origin in Birmingham is very high and in such a situation, a large number of spectators are expected to be present in the match between these two countries on 31 July. Birmingham Games CEO Ian Reid said, “The India-Pakistan match will be the highlight of the Commonwealth Games.” England and Australia may not be in the same group, but the spectators will be hoping that these two teams will face each other in the knockout stage. Tickets for the semi-finals and final are already sold out.

For me it’s like a world cup
Cricketers, who are usually confined to their hotel rooms during bilateral matches, will also get a chance to meet players from other sports during the Commonwealth Games. The cricketers, however, will not have to stay in the game village with other international players, but they will be a part of the opening ceremony. They will also get a chance to watch the sport of their choice. India’s top all-rounder Deepti Sharma recently said, ‘I am really very excited about the games. For me it is like playing in the World Cup. I have been preparing for this for a long time.

australia team strong contender
The 8 teams are divided into 2 groups of 4 teams each. Group A consists of India, Pakistan, Australia and Barbados while Group B consists of England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka. This competition will also give an opportunity to all the teams to assess their position before next year’s T20 World Cup. In T20 and ODI cricket, the current world champion Australia is a strong contender for the title. England are only slightly behind their arch-rivals while teams like India, New Zealand and South Africa have made good progress in recent years.

Indian team’s performance is not good
India have lost four series in the last two years, but they won the series against Sri Lanka last month. Under the new captain Harmanpreet Kaur, India will try to give a tough fight to their rivals in all formats. Like men’s cricket, women’s cricket is also progressing rapidly and India needs to make rapid progress in this. Former India captain Anjum Chopra said that India needs to treat the Commonwealth Games like any other tournament. The circumstances will be slightly different in this, as it is not an ICC tournament. The players will be part of the entire Indian contingent. He would definitely like to win a medal for the country, but you have to understand the reality as well.

The Indian team is making progress but will have to find the best combination now. The first match of the competition will be played between India and Australia on 29 July, while Pakistan will face Barbados on the same day. The final will be played at Edgbaston on 7 August.
