Gujarat will now play the second qualifier
New Delhi. 4-time champion Chennai Super Kings defeated Gujarat Titans (Chennai Super Kings vs Gujarat Titans) by 15 runs in the first qualifier match and made it to the final of IPL 2023. Despite the defeat, Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans will get another chance to reach the final. The Gujarat team will now face the winning team of the eliminator match to be played between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians.
Chasing the target of 173 runs, Shubman Gill scored the highest 42 runs from Gujarat Titans. Rashid Khan scored 30 runs in 16 balls while Dasun Shanaka scored 17 and Vijay Shankar got out after scoring 14 runs. Opener Ridhiman Saha returned to the pavilion after scoring 12 runs. The Gujarat team got piled on 157 runs in 20 overs. Deepak Chahar, Mahish Tikshna and Ravindra Jadeja took 2-2 wickets from CSK. 2 wickets went to Mathisa Pathirana and one wicket to Tushar Deshpande.
Rituraj took advantage of life donation
Earlier, opener Rituraj Gaikwad scored an inning of 60 runs taking advantage of the lifeline but Gujarat Titans restricted Chennai Super Kings to 172 for 7. Rituraj hit seven fours and a six in his 44-ball innings. He shared an 87-run partnership in 64 balls for the first wicket with Devon Conway. Conway, however, did not look comfortable during his 34-ball 40.

Jadeja played an inning of 22 runs in 16 balls.
The team failed to convert Ajinkya Rahane (17 in 10 balls), Ambati Rayudu (17 in nine balls) into a big innings. Ravindra Jadeja played an inning of 22 runs in 16 balls in the last over. For Gujarat Titans, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma took two wickets each while Darshan Nalkande, Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed took one wicket each. Nalkande, playing the first match of the season, got Rituraj Gaikwad caught by Shubman Gill in the second over itself but it was called a no-ball. Rituraj celebrated this life donation by hitting a six and then a four on the free hit. Conway hit his first four against this bowler in the fourth over of the innings.
Conway and Rituraj added 49 runs in the powerplay.
Rituraj welcomed Noor Ahmed with a boundary in the sixth over. In the same over, Chennai scored 49 runs in the powerplay with fours from Conway. While Conway was struggling to hit big shots from one end, Rituraj on the other hand completed his half-century in 36 balls with a four against Mohit Sharma in the ninth over. This is his fourth half-century in four matches against Gujarat.

Mohit got Rituraj caught by David Miller on his slow ball in the 12th over. In the next over, Noor Ahmed bowled Shivam Dubey (one run), after which the Gujarat bowlers tightened the noose. The team’s century was completed with one run from Conway on the first ball of the 14th over against Rashid. In the next over, the ball went for four runs by taking the edge of Conway’s bat. This was the team’s first four in 30 balls. Rahane hit a six in the same over but caught Gill at point on the next ball.
Dhoni disappointed Mahendra Singh
In an attempt to play a big shot against Mohammed Shami, Conway caught Rashid Khan at the boundary. Rayudu was dismissed in the 18th over after hitting a six against Rashid. The fans who expected sixes from Mahendra Singh Dhoni who came to the crease were disappointed. He became the second victim of Mohit by scoring one run. Jadeja hit a four in the last over, while Moeen Ali (9 not out) hit a six in Shami’s over to take the team to a competitive score. Jadeja got bowled on the last ball.
