‘Don’t take young Sri Lankan team lightly’: Wasim Akram’s warning to Pakistan ahead of Asia Cup final

Dubai. Dasun Shanaka’s Sri Lankan team will take on Babar Azam’s Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup 2022 in Dubai on Sunday. After losing the opening match against Afghanistan, Sri Lanka made a spectacular comeback and won four matches in a row. They defeated Bangladesh in the league stages and then all other teams of Super 4 including India and Pakistan.

Confident, Lavrej Shanaka & Co. is just one step away from winning a historic title that will serve as a fillip to his country’s cricket. But on the other hand, Pakistan would definitely like to avenge the loss in the final match of Super 4. However, it is no wonder that he will come back stronger to face the challenge of Sri Lanka.

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram believes that Babar Azam & Co will learn from their mistakes and do better in the final. The fast bowler also said that Sri Lanka cannot be taken lightly. Akram told BBN Sports, ‘Pakistan team’s performance in this Asia Cup has been excellent. Although his batting did not look good in the match against Sri Lanka, still the bowling was good. Hope they learn from their mistakes. But still, I think Pakistan is the favorite in the final. But the exciting and young Sri Lankan team cannot be taken for granted.

He further said, ‘Pakistan cricket lovers are saying that our middle order is a bit inexperienced and this was revealed in the last Super 4 match after Rizwan’s dismissal. But there will be a good wicket to play in the final and hopefully they come back stronger.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has not been able to show anything special in the current Asia Cup. So far, only 10, 9, 14, 0 and 30 runs have come off his bat in five innings. But Akram feels that he will be back in form and for that he just needs a good innings. Akram said, ‘Babar is one of the best players in the world and he just needs one good innings. He struggled a bit as he was probably worried about the lack of runs. But the good thing is that he has spent time at the crease and that counts for any great player. I think he will do well in the finals.

It would have been a happy moment for the Dasun Shanaka-led side if they had been playing the final at their home ground, but looking at their performances in the Super Four, it can be said that the challenge for the Babar Azam-led Pakistan team will be no one. It won’t be easy by the way. Sri Lanka is in a way the host of the Asia Cup, but due to security reasons, it could not organize it in its home country and hence the United Arab Emirates got the opportunity to organize this tournament.
