England players are paying more attention to money than the country, Captain Jose Butler in tension

London. England’s limited-overs captain Jos Buttler has admitted that he is upset at players not being able to pick the best team for international tournaments as they prefer franchise cricket. Alex Hales, Sam Billings and David Willey have decided not to play the series against Bangladesh in March to play franchise cricket. The England Cricket Board (ECB) on Thursday announced the limited overs team for three ODIs and as many T20 matches against Bangladesh. Some key players are not part of the tour, who want to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Players like Alex Hales, Liam Dawson and Sam Billings will play for their respective PSL franchises. Left-arm fast bowler David Willey does not have a PSL deal, but he is not part of the ODI or T20 squad for the Bangladesh tour. Johnny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone are yet to recover from their injuries. In such a situation, Jose Butler told ‘ESPN Cricinfo’, “We want to choose our best available team in the World Cup and big ICC tournaments.” Sometimes there is frustration that we are not able to do this, but I understand the decision of the players.

England has selected 37 players in the 33 ODIs played since the 2019 World Cup. Butler said, “This is a strange situation. The way the matches are scheduled, we have to understand both the sides. Being the captain of England, I want the best players to play, but then from the point of view of the players, there is a lot of difference between earning from playing for England and playing franchise cricket, which has to be understood.

England have selected two new players Tom Abel and Rehan Ahmed in the team before the tour of Bangladesh. Butler said, “In these circumstances you have to choose the best available option. If someone doesn’t play, someone else will get a chance, but I don’t want to get into a situation where you say this player will never play for England again.”
