Gavaskar blamed Ashwin for the loss against South Africa, said – catches and run outs are missed

New Delhi. The Indian team started the ICC T20 World Cup in a great way. After winning two consecutive matches, India had to face defeat against South Africa. India had defeated Pakistan and Netherlands but in the third match, they were defeated in the last over. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar attributed India’s defeat not to poor fielding but to Ashwin’s expensive bowling.

The T20 World Cup match was played between India and South Africa on Sunday 30 October. After the top order flop, India scored 133 runs for 9 wickets on the basis of Suryakumar Yadav’s fifty. India took three wickets for 24 runs on the strength of Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Shami’s superb bowling. After this, Aidan Markram and David Miller changed the match while handling the innings. Virat had dropped the catch of Markram while Rohit Sharma missed the chance of run out. Proteas team achieved the target of victory by losing 5 wickets in 19.4 overs.

Ashwin gave 43 runs in 4 overs against South Africa. Bhuvneshwar 21, Arshdeep 25, Shami 13 while Hardik Pandya spent 29 runs. Speaking to Aaj Tak, Gavaskar said, “I think in cricket, there are chances of missing catches and running outs. We can’t blame any one player for losing the match. When luck does not favor you, then even the biggest player leaves such catches or does not take advantage of the opportunity to run out. I think when the Indian team was fielding, the biggest problem that came up was about a bowler spending 43 runs.

He further said, “I feel that Yuzvendra Chahal should have played in the match against Netherlands. By playing this match, we could give him confidence for the upcoming matches. It is very important to be given confidence.”
