‘I can’t tell right, but…’: Jhulan Goswami on Deepti Sharma-Charlie Dean run out

Kolkata/Aaron Roy Burman. In the third and final one-day international between India and England played at Lord’s ground in London on 24 September, the debate continues over Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma’s run out of non-striker Charlie Dean. Now Jhulan Goswami, who has been a fast bowler, has also expressed her opinion about this. This was Jhulan Goswami’s last international match. Actually, Deepti went ahead before bowling at the non-strike end and ran out Charlie Dean, which helped India win the match. Charlie Dean was then playing on 47 runs and England needed 17 runs to win. This run out was according to the rules of the game, but the England players were not happy with it.

When Jhulan Goswami was asked about this, she said, ‘I am not the right person to talk about it, I was standing far away, so only Deepti can tell this topic well.’ Jhulan, popularly known as ‘Chakda Express’, added, ‘But it is true that Dean was getting out of the crease quite a few times and even the television footage is proof of this. When Renuka (Singh Thakur) was bowling, Charlie Dean had stepped outside the crease several times, so it was happening for a long time. This kind of run out always came under the rules, but it was considered against the spirit of the game. The ICC recently changed the playing conditions to move such run outs from ‘unfair play’ to the ‘run out’ category.

Playing his last series, the 39-year-old Goswami featured in all three matches and played his part in India’s 3-0 win over England by becoming the most economical bowler of both the teams with an economy rate of 3.00 in 27 overs. Jhulan started her cricket career in 2002 and ended her career as the highest wicket-taker in women’s cricket. He took 44 wickets in 12 Tests, 255 wickets in 204 ODIs and 56 wickets in 68 T20 Internationals. Jhulan participated in five ODI World Cups (2005, 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2022) in her career and is the highest wicket-taker in the Women’s World Cup. She is the only fast bowler to take more than 250 ODI wickets in women’s cricket.
