‘If one or two innings of KL Rahul goes bad then you will see Shubman Gill opening’

New Delhi. Former Team India cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes that Shubman Gill can replace KL Rahul as India’s opener against Australia. He said that if Rahul fails to impress in his first two innings against Australia, then you can see Shubman Gill opening. In recent times, Shubman Gill has been in excellent form in all three formats. Gill has recently given India a big win by 168 runs by scoring a century in the third T20 match against New Zealand. With this century, Gill has become the fifth and youngest Indian player to score a century in all three formats.

During a conversation on Star Sports, when asked whether it would be right to open with Shubman Gill in the Australia series? Mohammad Kaif replied, “Even if KL Rahul is the vice-captain, it can still happen. I am sure Rahul will start. KL Rahul will be under a lot of pressure. He needs to start scoring runs immediately. If one or two innings go bad, then Shubman Gill will start in place of KL Rahul.

Mohammad Kaif told why he is confident that Shubman Gill will play in the middle order during the series. He said, “Shubman Gill can land at number 5 or number 6. He will undoubtedly perform. Cheteshwar Pujara will come at number three and Virat Kohli at number four. Shreyas Iyer is not well right now. So he can fit in at No.5 or No.6.”

Mohammad Kaif believes that Shubman Gill is capable of getting a place in the playing XI. He said, “Shubman Gill is the kind of player you want to see in the starting lineup. So he will find his place somewhere. He is a great batsman with great form. His batting style is simple.
