India vs Pakistan: Kapil Dev could not forget Javed Miandad’s six even today, still cannot sleep

New Delhi. India will take on Pakistan in the blockbuster match of the Asia Cup 2022 on 28 August. Both India and Pakistan have rich cricket history. Due to political tension, bilateral series between the two countries is not happening. Teams of India and Pakistan play each other in ICC tournaments. There have been many exciting matches between the two countries in the past, which the fans still remember. India dominates the Pakistan team in ICC tournaments, while overall Pakistan is ahead of Team India in terms of victory.

Whenever there is a discussion of a cricket match between India and Pakistan, first of all people remember the names of Chetan Sharma and Javed Miandad. The six hit by Javed Miandad on Chetan Sharma’s ball was teased to crores of Indians. Miandad had given Pakistan a historic victory by hitting a six off Sharma’s last ball in the final of the Australasia Cup on 18 April 1986. Then the captain of the Indian team was Kapil Dev. He remembered that final played 36 years ago in a program of Star Sports. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram also participated in this discussion with him. Miandad’s six-win victory kept the Pakistani team’s dominance on Indian cricket for four years.

Describing the story of that match, Wasim Akram said, the Indian team was close to making 270 runs but they got 3 wickets quickly and Team India could only score 245 runs. In this match, India’s opener Sunil Gavaskar scored 92, K Srikkanth scored 75 and Dilip Vengsarkar scored 50. Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan took two wickets.

After this, Team India bowled brilliantly till Pakistan’s 9 wickets became 241 runs. At the other end, Javed Miandad was standing firm on the side of the rock. Pakistan had scored 242 runs in 49.5 overs. He needed four runs off the last ball of the match to win.

Captain Kapil Dev said, “When the last over came, we went to Chetan. I still think it was not their fault. They needed 4 runs off the last ball and we decided it would be a low yorker. There was no other option. He tried his best, we all tried. It turned out to be a low full-toss. Miandad maintained his backfoot and hit the shot. Even today when we remember, we cannot sleep. That defeat crushed the confidence of the entire side for 4 years. It was very difficult to come back from there.”
