IPL 2023, RR SWOT Analysis: Opening pair and spinner will be important, pace attack is a concern, know the strength and weakness of the team

New Delhi. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) team came close to winning their second Indian Premier League (IPL) title last year, but Gujarat Titans made it a disappointment for them by grabbing the trophy in their debut year itself. Now the Rajasthan team with its ‘match winning’ players will be eager to perform better in the upcoming season starting from 31st March. Although the team has retained its ‘Co’ team despite the injury of some players.

Rajasthan Royals have to play their first match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 2 April. Kumar Sangakkara will continue to play the dual role of Director of Cricket and Head Coach at IPL team Rajasthan Royals, while Trevor Penney will be his assistant. Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga will be the fast bowling coach while Zubin Bharucha will be the director of strategy, development and performance. Giles Landise will be the analysis and technique coach, Siddharth Lahiri the assistant coach and Dishant Yagnik the fielding coach. The team, captained by Sanju Samson, has also retained the services of John Gloster (Chief Physio), Rob Young (Team Doctor), AT Rajamani Prabhu (Conditioning Coach). Mon Brockman will be the team’s mental performance coach while Neil Barry will be the assistant physio.

Strong side of Rajasthan Royals:

The strength of the team is its batting line-up, in which the opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler looks dangerous and most potent. Other teams of the tournament will be wary of this pair. England T20 captain Butler is scoring runs continuously till 2023 season. Jaiswal is also in excellent form. He scored 396 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy at an average of almost 80, while in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy he scored 266 runs at an impressive strike rate of 141.48. The left-handed batsman also scored a century for India A against Bangladesh A. The team’s middle order includes captain Sanju Samson along with Joe Root and Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer and the talented Riyan Parag. The spin department looks strong with the presence of Australian Adam Zampa along with the experienced pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Weak side of Rajasthan Royals:

The role of an all-rounder is very important in limited overs cricket, in which the team can be weak. The team has only one excellent all-rounder in Jason Holder of the West Indies, but South African Donovan Ferreira and domestic cricketers Abdul Basith and Akash Vashisht are yet to be tested at this level. But the ‘impact player’ rule can become a loophole for the team, as it reduces the need for an all-rounder. Bowling can be a cause of concern for the Jaipur team. The fast bowling attack looks normal except for Trent Boult. Things got worse for Rajasthan Royals after the famous Krishna missed the IPL due to a back fracture. Now the responsibility will be on Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Sen and Obed McCoy of West Indies. Where pace bowling is a matter of concern, the spin attack is in the safe hands of Ashwin, Chahal and Zampa which is one of the best in the tournament.

Who will have a chance:

The pace department looks weak but the upcoming season could be a great opportunity for Saini, Sen, KM Asif and Delhi left-arm seamer Kuldeep Yadav to make a mark and make their presence felt. Along with this, the upcoming season will also provide opportunities to Jason Holder and Adam Zampa.

What is the danger of the team :

Looking at the past record, the tournament has not been so good for Rajasthan Royals, as they have a history of failures. The team won the initial phase title in 2008 under the captaincy of the late Shane Warne but after that the journey was disappointing till last year. Last year the team was runner-up. In the history of the tournament, the team made it to the playoffs only thrice and was also banned for two years. But in the coming season, coach Kumar Sangakkara’s team would like to achieve success with continuous good performance.

Strongest Playing XI: Devdutt Padikkal, Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, Jason Holder, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Sen, Navdeep Saini, Trent Boult.
