Irani Cup 2022: Mukesh’s ‘swing’ and Sarfaraz’s superb form strengthen rest of India

New Delhi. The Rest of India got off to a strong start on the first day of the Irani Trophy match on Saturday, thanks to Sarfaraz Khan’s century, after Mukesh Kumar bowled out Saurashtra for 98 in the first innings with a scintillating ‘swing’ bowling. Sarfaraz was playing 125 runs in 126 balls till the stumps, due to which the score of Rest of India was 205 for three wickets. Earlier, with the swing of Mukesh (4/23), the team, with the help of young Kuldeep Sen (3/41) and Umran Malik (3/25), defeated 2019-20 Ranji Trophy champions Saurashtra in 24.5 overs. Was bundled out for just 98 runs.

In the presence of chief selector Chetan Sharma and his teammate Sunil Joshi, Sarfaraz made a scintillating stroke. He had hit 19 fours and three sixes in his innings so far. The rest of India’s score was reduced to 18 for three, then Sarfaraz took over the innings and batted aggressively against the Saurashtra bowlers. Sarfaraz shared an unbeaten 185-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Hanuma Vihari (62 not out off 145 balls).

Sarfaraz hit a catchy shot off Jaydev Unadkat’s balls. Unadkat hit two bouncers in which Sarfaraz hit a six and a four. This bowler then had to spread the fielders to stop the boundary. He completed his century with a ‘late cut’ on left-arm spinner Dharmendra Jadeja. Then in one over of Jadeja, he scored three fours. There was good bounce on the pitch and taking advantage of the moisture of the wicket initially, Mukesh troubled the Saurashtra players in his first spell.

The wickets of both Saurashtra openers Harvik Desai and Snell Patel were in the name of Mukesh. Although the important wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara (01 run) was jerked by Kuldeep. Umran Malik troubled the batsmen at a speed of 145 kmph. Arpit Vasavada scored 23 and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja scored 28 runs for Saurashtra.
