No hard work to join Team India, Suryakumar Yadav did smart work

Did a few things that really helped in the domestic season of 2018 and 2019.

New Delhi. Suryakumar Yadav, who waited a long time for selection in the Indian team, made some changes in his game to attract the selectors. He changed his ‘hard work’ (hard work) into ‘smart work’. The 32-year-old batsman changed his method of practice, focused on his diet and batted more on the off-side.

Suryakumar told ESPNcricinfo, “My wife Devisha and I thought about it a lot in 2017-18 and decided to do some smart work. You work hard, on the basis of which you move forward. But we decided to do something different.” He said, “I started practicing in a different way. I realized after 2018 that I need to work on my game. I started playing more shots towards the off side.

I focused on diet and started eating less
Suryakumar said, “I focused on food and started eating less. I did a few things that really helped me in the 2018 and 2019 domestic seasons. After that in 2020 my body had completely changed. Suryakumar made his international debut in a T20 match against England in March 2021, 11 years after starting his first-class cricket career.

Was practicing without thinking before
Suryakumar Yadav realized that he was practicing without thinking at first and was getting frustrated. So he changed his methods of practice. Suryakumar said, “It took time. It took us a year and a half to figure out what would help me and how I could move forward. After that we both realized that we were moving in the right direction and then everything started going well. I knew what to do, how and how much I had to practice.”

After 2018 the quality came in my practice, food, net session
“Earlier, I was just practicing and then used to get a little frustrated. Then I realized there is no quality in this kind of practice even though I have been practicing a lot. But after 2018 the quality added to my practice, food, net session and everything, which helped me a lot.”

Was out of the team after poor performance in 2020
Due to poor performance in 2020, Suryakumar Yadav was dropped from India’s T20 squad for Australia tour. A few days later, he played a brilliant innings of 79 runs in 43 balls for Mumbai Indians. He said, “And then it was a complete build-up, runs were coming in IPL and all formats. So there was consistency in that and eventually I got form.”

Suryakumar Yadav said, “It was a little difficult. I mean all the teammates from different countries (during IPL) were telling me, your chance has come, you are doing very well. I was very excited at the time, and I imagined things: yes, I will do this, I will do that when I play for India. But then, when that opportunity didn’t come, obviously I was disappointed.”
