‘Not blooming Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the biggest mistakes’ former selector reprimanded after defeat
Highlights
Leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s record against England has been excellent.
Chahal has taken 16 wickets in 11 T20 Internationals against England.
Chahal’s best bowling figure (4-0-25-6) is also against England.
New Delhi. India’s campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 has ended with a big defeat at the hands of England in Adelaide. Coming to bat first, Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli’s fifties took India to 168/6, but England won the target by 10 wickets in 16 overs to enter the final. In India’s 15-member team, three players including Yuzvendra Chahal, Deepak Hooda and Harshal Patel are returning home without playing a single match. In such a situation, former India selector Sarandeep Singh believes that not feeding leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was one of the biggest mistakes of the team.
Sarandeep Singh said on news agency PTI, “One of the biggest mistakes of the team was not getting Yuzvendra Chahal to bloom in the entire tournament, especially against England. You saw how effective the England wrist spinners were. Rishabh Pant not playing in the league stage (he played only one game) also surprised me.”

He also pointed to the lack of runs from openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, which was regularly putting the Indian middle order under pressure. He said, “Unfortunately for India, Rahul and Rohit could not find form in the big matches. Put pressure on Virat and Suryakumar, both of whom cannot perform in every match.
He said that the team management will have to take some big decisions before the next T20 World Cup to be played in 2024. “I don’t think at least half of the team members including Rohit, Virat, Ashwin, Shami and Bhuvneshwar are playing the next T20 World Cup. The selectors need to take a decision on this.”

Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson was also surprised at Chahal’s exit, while Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone proved to be very effective in not allowing the Indian batsmen to score runs. Watson said on Star Sports, “India didn’t have a wrist spinner and the England spinner had two. He can control his pace, like Rashid did. He has incredible skills and he would have been fantastic against England.”
The poor performance of the Indian openers was also the reason for the defeat of the Indian team. Despite all claims of adopting a new aggressive approach, India were quite conservative in the powerplay overs time and again. Watson said, “India played in fear in batting. Unfortunately, Rohit and KL could not take the game forward in the first six overs. They have firepower, but you have to take the game forward in T20 cricket. Hardik was able to carry on the game, but India should have attacked 6-8 overs earlier.”
