As expected, India easily won the first ODI against Zimbabwe yesterday. This victory may not have been difficult for India but it has many meanings. Lokesh Rahul may not have got a chance to bat, but for him this is the first ODI win of his captaincy career. Shubman Gill successfully took the responsibility of opening with Shikhar Dhawan again, this was the third century partnership between the two in the last four innings. The bowlers also showed great performance from their side and decorated the stage for victory in the three-match series. India is now 1-0 ahead and if no miracle happens, tomorrow the series will be in its name in the second match itself.

However, Zimbabwe had won the series against Bangladesh just a week ago and some of its players showed excellent batting performance. In such a situation, India took the right decision after winning the toss and sending the hosts to bat first. Although India were bowled out for 189 by Zimbabwe, the score should have been even lower. India had taken his first five wickets for just 66 and eight wickets for 110 runs. But, after this Brad Evans and Richard Angarwa added 70 runs for the ninth wicket to reach 189 runs. Deepak Chahar, Akshar Patel and famous Krishna took three wickets each. Mohammad Siraj also took a wicket.

Zimbabwe used eight bowlers to stop India before the target of 190, but Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill persisted. Both gave India a ten-wicket victory in the thirty-first over. In ODI cricket, the opening pair is now seen settling for India. Dhawan scored 81 off 113 balls and Shubman Gill scored 82 runs off 72 balls. Both of them had a solid start against the West Indies recently. The consistent performance of these two has now created a new challenge for the team’s second opener Rituraj Gaikwad and Ishaan Kishan. Although, Lokesh Rahul himself is also an opener, but he has fixed the lower order for himself in the first match, which did not even bother to play.

Not only is this Lokesh’s first win in four ODIs as captain, but it was also a pleasant return to the team six months after the hernia operation. Injury is taking a toll on Washington Sundar’s career. He has had to be out due to injury many times while in the Indian team. This time he has been injured again, due to which he had to be out of the Indian team touring Zimbabwe. Bengal all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed has been included in his place. In the last IPL, Shahbaz had done well for RCB and also caught the attention of the selectors during domestic cricket as well.

The whole world considers the bench strength of Indian cricketers as iron. The contribution of India ‘A’ team in making this talented group is undeniable. When Rahul Dravid used to be the coach of the India A team, then he tried to organize as many A team series as possible and the players who came out of it are now strengthening the bench strength of the Indian team. For the last eight-nine months, the schedule of the Indian A team was completely stalled, but now the flurry has started again. Probably soon the A team of India is going to compete with the A teams of New Zealand and Australia. BCCI is planning to organize it along with India’s domestic cricket.

Under this, when the matches of Duleep Trophy will be played from September 8 to 25 next month, India A team will face New Zealand A team. It also includes a day-night unofficial Test match. After this series, the team of Australia A can also come to India at the end of the year.

FTP scheme to popularize women’s cricket
After the inclusion of women’s cricket in the Commonwealth Games, this game can get more attention in the coming times. Now the ICC has announced the FTP scheme for the first time to make women’s cricket more popular. Such a program is already going on in men’s cricket and its result has also been revealed once in the form of World Test Championship. Now women’s cricket will also be a part of the future tour plan. Under this, the ICC has prepared a blueprint for a total of seven Tests, 135 ODIs and 159 T20 matches till April 2025. It is believed to be applicable from May this year. The Indian women’s team will also be busy in this future tour schedule.

Indian women cricketers will get to play two Tests, 27 ODIs and 36 T20 matches during three years. The test match will be against Australia and England. According to the FTP for the next three years, only seven Test matches will be played, which suggests that women still need to be given more opportunities in Tests. Apart from this, the ICC has also announced the next round of FTP for men. Under this, the Indian men’s team will play 38 Tests, 39 ODIs and 61 T20 matches between 2023 and 2027. But, there will be no bilateral series with Pakistan during this period.

Former BCCI secretary dies in Ranchi
Former BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary passed away in Ranchi. He was 62 years old. He also played the role of manager of the Indian team on some occasions. He is known for getting the stadium built in Ranchi as well as giving full status to the Jharkhand State Cricket Association. Amitabh Chaudhary was the manager of the Indian team with which Mahendra Singh Dhoni toured Zimbabwe in the initial days. Chandrakant Pandit, who played a key role in making Madhya Pradesh the Ranji Trophy champion, has been appointed by the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders as their head coach for the next season. Pandit is being recognized as a successful coach.

And finally … the English season, where Indian men and women cricketers are performing at their best. Cheteshwar Pujara has so far played brilliantly for Sussex in the County Championship and has scored 1094 runs in eight matches including five centuries. On the other hand, Pujara is now playing vigorous innings for Sussex in the ‘Royal London One Day Cup’ as well. He hit back to back centuries – that too with a bang. Cheteshwar Pujara, who is captaining the team, first scored 63 runs against Gloucestershire in this ODI tournament, scored 107 runs from 79 balls against Warwickshire and then 174 runs from 131 balls against Surrey. Pujara also played an unbeaten 49 against Durham in the last match to win his team Sussex by four wickets.

Another Indian cricketer Krunal Pandya has also done well for Warwickshire so far. Apart from taking three wickets against Sussex, he also took three wickets against Leicestershire. Earlier, he has played an innings of 74 runs against Surrey along with taking one wicket. In the last match against Nottinghamshire, Krunal did not bowl, but his 37 runs proved to be important in the team’s victory. By the way, Krunal can do wonders again against Middlesex today.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj, who is touring Zimbabwe, will play the remaining three county matches for Warwickshire next month. He got the contract only yesterday. Krunal Pandya is already playing in this team. Here, Indian women cricketers Jemima Rodriguez and Smriti Mandhana are performing well on average in England’s women’s ‘The Hundred’ tournament. Smriti Mandhana playing for Southern Brave and Jemima Rodrigues playing for Northern Superchargers have played some good innings. Jemima has to play against Birmingham Phoenix today. Another Indian cricketer Deepti Sharma is also included in the team of Birmingham Phoenix.
