Ponting compares Gilchrist but Head is far from Gilly’s quick hundreds

New Delhi. Travis Head has strengthened Australia’s position by scoring a blistering century against India on the very first day of the World Test Championship Final. Steve Smith also played an inning of 95 runs in the match but the Australian innings The focus remained completely around Head’s unbeaten 146 runs (156 balls, 22 fours, one six). Australia’s former captain Ricky Ponting has also been convinced of Head’s fast batting. He described Head as the ‘Adam Gilchrist of the present day’.

Ponting said, “He is similar to Gilchrist. He is scoring runs faster than Gilly at the moment. He has a strike rate of 81 in the qualification period of the World Test Championship, which is the highest among those who have scored more than 500 runs.” By the way, Head’s Test overall strike rate is currently 61.82. On Wednesday, Head also achieved the feat of scoring his first century in the WTC Final. He completed this century in 106 balls which included 14 fours and a six.

Scored centuries in less than 100 balls six times
Matthew Hayden, another former Australian cricketer, has also described Travis Head as a Gilchrist-like batsman. Although Head is being compared to Gilchrist, but he is not even close to the former Australia wicketkeeper in scoring a century at a fast pace in Tests. In Tests, Gilchrist has scored a century in less than 100 balls six times. The fastest century in Tests for Australia is recorded in the name of Gilly, which he scored in 57 balls against England in Perth in 2006. Apart from this, he twice 84 and once each scored hundreds in 86, 91 and 94 balls. Gilchrist scored 5570 runs in 96 Tests for Australia at an average of 47.60 and a strike rate of 81.95.

Head scored a hundred in less than 100 balls only once
Head, on the other hand, has completed only one of his six centuries in less than 100 balls. He scored a century in 85 balls in the 2021 Test against England in Brisbane. By the way, it is possible that Head, who has played only 36 Tests so far, will see more fast innings in the future and he will start hitting Gilli in terms of scoring a century in fewer balls.
