Satwik-Chirag pair did wonders in Swiss Open, entered the final with a bang

Basel: Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty fought back from a game down to enter the final of the Swiss Open Super Series 300 badminton tournament here on Saturday. Satwik and Chirag defeated the third seeded Malaysian pair of Ong Yew Sin and Teo E Yee 21-19 17-21 21-17 in a semi-final that lasted one hour and nine minutes. The Indian pair will now face the unseeded pair of Ren Xiang Yu and Tan Qiang of China on Sunday. Earlier, the Indian pair defeated Denmark’s JP Bey and Lasse Molhede 15-21, 21-11, 21-14 in a hard-fought three-game match on Friday night to enter the semi-finals.

Star players did not show strength

Earlier, star players like PV Sindhu, two-time medal winner in the Olympics, were ruled out of the tournament. Sindhu bowed out in the second round after going down in a thrilling three-game match to unseeded Indonesian daughter Kusuma Wardani in the match played on Saturday.

With this defeat, Sindhu’s dream of defending her title in the Swiss Open Super 300 badminton tournament also got shattered. World number nine Sindhu, seeded fourth, went down 15-21, 21-12, 18-21 to 38th-ranked Vardani.

Earlier on Thursday, world number nine and fifth seed HS Prannoy crashed out in the second round after going down in straight games to unseeded Christo Popov of France 8-21, 8-21. Another Indian player Kidambi Srikanth went down 22-20, 21-17 to Cheuk Yiu Lee of Hong Kong. National champion Mithun Manjunath also crashed out in the second round after losing 19-21 10-21 to Chia Hao Li of Chinese Taipei.
