Sunil Gavaskar: England’s stadium named after Sunil Gavaskar, for the first time an Indian cricketer will get such an honor

India’s great batsman Sunil Gavaskar is a big face in world cricket. After Kentucky in America and Jansibar in Tanzania, now he has got a great honor in England as well. The name of a stadium in England is being changed to Sunil Gavaskar. The stadium will get a new name at a ceremony at the Leicester Cricket Ground on 23 July. This is the first time that a cricket stadium in England will be named after an Indian cricketer.

Actually, the campaign to change the name of Leicester Cricket was started by Keith Vaz, an Indian-origin MP. Keith Vaz represented Leicester in England as a long-time MP. He started the exercise of changing the name of this ground to Sunil Gavaskar.

On this honour, Gavaskar said, “I am very happy and honored that a ground in Leicester is being named after me. Leicester is probably the city with the strongest supporters of the sport, especially Indian cricket, and so it is indeed a great honor.

On the change in the name of the stadium, Keith, former MP of Leicester, said, ‘We are extremely honored and thrilled that Sunil Gavaskar has given us permission to name the pitch and ground after his name. He is one of the great cricketers of the world. He has delighted cricket fans with his record breaking performances over the years. He is not only the Little Master but also the Great Master of the game.

Let us tell you that Sunil Gavaskar did the work of waving the flag of Team India all over the world in the initial phase of the Indian cricket team. He was the first Indian batsman to reach the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket. Along with this, he also held the record for scoring the most centuries in Tests for a long time. However, later master blaster Sachin Tendulkar broke his record.

At the same time, Gavaskar played a total of 125 Test matches for India in which he scored 10122 runs with 34 centuries. His average of scoring runs in this format was 51.12. At the same time, he played 108 ODI matches in which he has 3092 runs in his name.
