T20 World Cup 2022: ‘Worst defeat of my tenure’, South Africa coach Mark Boucher’s pain spilled

New Delhi. Outgoing South Africa coach Mark Boucher on Sunday described the defeat at the hands of the Netherlands as his worst defeat as a coach. With this defeat, Boucher’s team was out of the T20 World Cup. After the match against Zimbabwe was washed out due to rain, South Africa had reached the top of Group Two due to victories over Bangladesh and India. They only needed a win over the Netherlands to reach the last four.

The Netherlands team posted a challenging score of 158 for four and then restricted South Africa to 145 for eight to register a 13-run win. Boucher was asked where the mistake went, he said, “If you look at the way we started, our players were not energetic. Whether it is because of the early morning of the match or something else, this time was really difficult for us.” South Africa once again had to get out of the World Cup early. He has not yet made it to the final of the ODI or T20 World Cup.

Boucher said, “To be honest, I feel very disappointed. I believe this team deserved better chances but unfortunately it didn’t happen which is very disappointing for me. It’s definitely disappointing for each and every one of our players.” South Africa’s return to international cricket was associated with this story from the 1992 ODI World Cup itself. Then in the semi-final against England, he needed 22 runs from 13 balls but due to rain, the game was stopped and in the end he got a challenge to score 21 runs in one ball.

After this, against Australia in the 1999 World Cup semi-final, he needed only one run from four balls, but after the run-out of Anal Donald, Australia made a comeback and made it to the final. The 2003 World Cup saw him in good shape but Duckworth could not properly assess Lewis’ figures and was ruled out of the tournament due to a tie against Sri Lanka. Apart from this, he also had to face defeat in the semi-finals in the 2007 and 2015 ODI World Cups. In the T20 World Cup, South Africa made it to the semi-finals twice in 2009 and 2014.

Boucher was asked whether the defeat against Netherlands was the worst of all, he said, “It is probably the worst defeat I have had as my coach. It is very disappointing because as a player you can do something while as a coach you have to depend on others to perform well. This is definitely the worst defeat for me as a coach.
