The golden days of Indian cricket will return again, BCCI will start these two big domestic tournaments!

Mumbai: The BCCI is contemplating resuming the prestigious Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup while plans are on to complete the Ranji Trophy season in the upcoming domestic season. The Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup have not been held for at least three seasons while the BCCI had to cancel the Ranji season for the first time in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The BCCI had shortened the last Ranji season.

The BCCI Apex Council on Thursday discussed various options for the 2022-23 season, with board president Sourav Ganguly announcing that a full domestic season would be played in 2022-23. The board is looking to start the men’s senior season with the Duleep Trophy, which is likely to be played from September 8. Along with this, the BCCI is also considering hosting the Irani Cup from October 1 to 5.

Earlier the Duleep Trophy was held on a knockout basis between five zones but later it became a three-team match, with the top two teams progressing to the finals on a round-robin format. The current Ranji Trophy champions face the Rest of India team in the Irani Cup.

The option of hosting the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy was also discussed. The Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) is likely to be played from October 11 while the Vijay Hazare Trophy (ODI format) is expected from November 12. Ranji Trophy can start from December 13, with the knockout matches being played from February 1.

According to one of the formats discussed in the meeting, Ranji Trophy can have four groups of eight elite teams and one group of six plate teams. Ganguly said that the women’s under-16 category will be started from the coming season.
