There was nepotism in the selection of players… PM Modi appreciated transparency in the field of sports

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation for the 9th time from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of India’s 76th Independence Day. During this, he attacked fiercely in his speech by referring to corruption to familyism and nepotism. Especially in the field of sports, the manner in which corruption was attacked and the kind of transparency that has come, was highly appreciated by PM Modi. In this speech, he said, ‘The country did not have talent earlier, it was not so, but the nepotism of the selection of players was very high and they had nothing to do with them winning and losing.’

He said, ‘When there is transparency in the field of sports and players are selected on the basis of merit. Ability is starting to be respected. Today, the tricolor of India is spreading in the field of play in the world. PM Modi recently met all the players participating in the Commonwealth Games. Addressing the players, the Prime Minister said, ‘You all were competing there but due to the difference of time, crores of Indians were playing in India. Till late night, the eyes of the countrymen were on your every action. Many people slept with alarms that would update your performance. You all have a big role in increasing this interest towards sports and for this you all deserve congratulations.

“An honest assessment of our performance this time is not possible only by the number of medals,” he said. Many of our players were seen playing close matches this time and this too is no less than a medal. The point would have been a gap of one second but we will cover that too because I believe in you.

At the same time, in his speech on the occasion of Independence Day, he said, ‘There are two big challenges before the country. The first is familyism and the second is corruption. There is a dire need to deal with this. Corruption and nepotism are hollowing the country like termites. Familism is such an evil that we need to fight together, I want the support of all Indians in this fight. It damages our talent, capabilities of the nation and gives rise to corruption.
