US Open: 19-year-old Carlos Alcarez became US Open champion, created history

New York: Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz has won the men’s singles title at the US Open tennis tournament. In the final, the 19-year-old Alcarez defeated Casper Rood of Norway 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. Roode was in the Grand Slam final for the second time this year and lost both times. Earlier, he had to face defeat against Rafael Nadal in the final match of the French Open. Third seed Alcarez won the match in 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Youngest world number-1
With this win, Carlos Alcarez has also become the world number one player in men’s singles. ATP rankings were introduced 49 years ago. He is the first teenager to become number one. If 23-year-old Roode had won this final, he too had a chance to become the No. 1 player, but he missed. After losing the first set, he came back in the second. But Alcarez won the title by winning the third set as a tie breaker and the fourth easily.

Youngest champion in 17 years
This is Carlos Alcarez’s first Grand Slam title. He reached the final for the first time. The 19-year-old is the youngest men’s Grand Slam champion since Rafael Nadal won the French Open in 2005. At the same time, he is the youngest player to win the US Open title in the last 32 years. He was knocked out in the quarterfinals at the US Open last year. In this year’s French Open also, he had traveled to the quarter-finals.

After becoming champion, Alcarez said, ‘It is something I have dreamed of since childhood. To be number 1 in the world, to be a Grand Slam champion, is something I have worked hard for.
