Birmingham: India has got another gold medal in wrestling in the Commonwealth Games. Vinesh Phogat gave this medal to the country in the women’s 53 kg freestyle category. Only four wrestlers took part in this category. Because of this, the winner was decided from the group round itself. Vinesh defeated Chamodya Maduravalge Don of Sri Lanka in her last match.

In the first match, Vinesh Phogat defeated Mercy Adekuroye of Nigeria and Samantha Stewart of Canada. He did not have much trouble in winning the gold medal. This is his third consecutive gold at the Commonwealth Games. Earlier in 2014 and 2018 also Vinesh had won the gold medal. This shows his dominance in the game. Vinesh Phogat also has medals in World Championships, Asian Games and Asian Championships.

No one was awarded a bronze medal because of the participation of four wrestlers. All four players played against each other. Vinesh topped with 12 points in 3 matches. Canada’s Samantha Stewart won the silver medal. She secured a last-minute win against Nigeria’s Mercy Adekuoroye.

Vinesh was a strong contender for the medal in the Tokyo Olympics, but she had to face defeat. Struggling for form and fitness, Vinesh had crashed out of the Olympics in the first round. After that she was also in controversies, but now with the victory she has won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games.
