New Delhi. On this day 20 years ago, Virender Sehwag announced his arrival in red ball cricket by scoring a century in his debut Test. By the time Sehwag earned his Test call for India during their tour of South Africa in 2001, he had already become a force to be reckoned with. Team India was to play a three-match Test series against the Proteas team. However, Sehwag did not have to wait long for his debut. He was named in India’s playing XI by Sourav Ganguly in the first match of the series at Bloemfontein.

After winning the toss, then South Africa captain Shaun Pollock invited the team led by Sourav Ganguly to bat first. Team India’s start in the match was not very good. He lost four early wickets – Shiv Sundar Das (9 runs off 50 balls), Rahul Dravid (2 runs off 10 balls), VVS Laxman (30 runs off 32 balls) and Sourav Ganguly (14 runs off 18 balls). India’s score became 68 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 20.3 overs.

Batting at number six, Sehwag joined India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar (155 runs off 154 balls) to stabilize his innings and put up a respectable score. Makhaya Ntini broke the partnership of Sehwag and Tendulkar and showed the way to Sachin’s pavilion.

After this Virender Sehwag took the lead and played a brilliant innings of 105 runs in 173 balls. In his century innings, Sehwag hit 19 brilliant fours. With this Sehwag became only the 11th Indian to score a century on his Test debut. Overall, he was the 73rd cricketer to achieve this feat. Even though India suffered a Test defeat, a new star was born who was redefining batting in the longest format.

India made a respectable score of 379 runs in the first innings. In reply, South Africa made 563 runs for the loss of 10 wickets and took a lead of 184 runs. India’s performance in the second innings of the match was even more disappointing and Team India was out for 237 runs. Chasing a target of 54 runs to win in the fourth innings, South Africa won the match by nine wickets.
