“It is a proud moment for me to represent Manipur in the National Games and the excitement doubled when I was asked to lead the team at the opening ceremony. Usually it is very hectic to attend the opening ceremony as my events start early the next day but I felt I should challenge myself this time.
The 28-year-old weightlifter said, “Yes, I don’t have an Asian Games medal and that’s something that’s on my mind. This will be my first Asian Games after being ruled out of the 2018 season due to a back injury. The level of competition in the Asiad will be great but my focus is now on the World Championships where I will get a chance to compete against the same lifters.
Sanjita Chanu won the silver medal by lifting a total of 187 kg (82 kg in snatch, 105 kg in clean and jerk). Odisha’s Sneha Soren won the bronze medal by lifting a total of 169 kg (73 kg in snatch, 96 kg in clean and jerk).
In the snatch, Mirabai took an early lead by lifting 81 kg in her first attempt. She lifted 84kg in her second attempt to take a twokg lead over her fellow lifter Sanjita from Manipur, who could lift only 80kg and 82kg in her first two attempts. Sanjita’s third attempt of 84kg was declared a foul. Mirabai chose to save her energy and did not come for the third attempt. In clean and jerk, Sanjita lifted 95 kg in her first attempt and then successfully lifted 100 and 105 kg.
