Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu: Mirabai beat Sanjita to win gold medal in 49kg category in national weightlifting

Gandhinagar: Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu won the expected gold medal in the 49kg category of women’s weightlifting event at the 36th National Games here on Friday by lifting 191kg. Mirabai, who won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August, lifted 84kg in snatch and 107kg in clean and jerk to win the title.

Mirabai, who is competing in her second National Games, revealed that she has a left wrist injury so she didn’t make it to her third attempt in both the categories. Mirabai said, “Recently during training at NIS Patiala, I injured my left wrist after which I made sure not to take too much risk. The World Championship is also to be held in December.

“It is a proud moment for me to represent Manipur in the National Games and the excitement doubled when I was asked to lead the team at the opening ceremony. Usually it is very hectic to attend the opening ceremony as my events start early the next day but I felt I should challenge myself this time.

The 28-year-old weightlifter said, “Yes, I don’t have an Asian Games medal and that’s something that’s on my mind. This will be my first Asian Games after being ruled out of the 2018 season due to a back injury. The level of competition in the Asiad will be great but my focus is now on the World Championships where I will get a chance to compete against the same lifters.

Sanjita Chanu won the silver medal by lifting a total of 187 kg (82 kg in snatch, 105 kg in clean and jerk). Odisha’s Sneha Soren won the bronze medal by lifting a total of 169 kg (73 kg in snatch, 96 kg in clean and jerk).

In the snatch, Mirabai took an early lead by lifting 81 kg in her first attempt. She lifted 84kg in her second attempt to take a twokg lead over her fellow lifter Sanjita from Manipur, who could lift only 80kg and 82kg in her first two attempts. Sanjita’s third attempt of 84kg was declared a foul. Mirabai chose to save her energy and did not come for the third attempt. In clean and jerk, Sanjita lifted 95 kg in her first attempt and then successfully lifted 100 and 105 kg.
