When Punjab released Mayank Agarwal, Manjrekar reacted, said a surprising thing

Mayank Agarwal Punjab Kings IPL 2023: Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes that one of the main reasons why Punjab Kings released their IPL 2022 captain Mayank Agarwal on Tuesday was because he was unable to justify the price tag after a poor season. Agarwal was named as the captain of the team for IPL 2022 and was retained by the franchise for Rs 12 crore. Agarwal joined the Punjab team in 2018 and formed a formidable opening partnership with KL Rahul, who was the captain of the team till 2021.

But the right-handed batsman failed to score runs in IPL 2022 due to his promotion to the leadership. Agarwal scored only 196 runs in 13 matches at an average of 16.33. On the leadership front, he did not fare well as Punjab ended the season at the sixth position in the ten-team points table.

Also, earlier this month, Punjab had announced that senior left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan will replace Agarwal as the captain in IPL 2023. Nothing works when your season is bad.

“There is a temptation to release that player and that money can be used to buy again or you know, look at another option,” Manjrekar said on the ‘IPL-Special Retention Show’ on Star Sports.

Manjrekar further felt that Agarwal relinquishing his opening position to England’s Jonny Bairstow was a poor decision for him as a batsman given that he had not batted better in the middle order in the later stages of IPL 2022. He said, “With KL Rahul at the top of the order, I batted with him for many seasons. He actually ousted KL Rahul at the top, became the captain and ideally you wanted another year to prove yourself.” .”
