When Sourav Ganguly was out on 99, the English player came running from the toilet, abused on the field

New Delhi. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly and former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff were not good friends during their playing days. Both were seen in a very aggressive manner on the field and there have been many clashes between the two on the field. Sourav Ganguly’s famous shirt-waving in the air at Lord’s Cricket Ground after India’s NatWest Trophy win in 2002 was also his reply to Flintoff. In fact, Andrew Flintoff took off his shirt on England’s victory in the ODI match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The quarrel between these two started from here, which increased so much that Andrew Flintoff came running from the toilet to the ground to abuse Sourav Ganguly.

Sometime back, Andrew Flintoff’s former England teammate Steve Harmison recalled this incident. On former Australia spinner Brad Hogg’s show ‘Test of Time’, Harmison recalled the incident of dismissing Ganguly for 99 in his Test debut against India in 2002. It was the Nottingham Test of India’s tour of England, when Harmison had Ganguly clean bowled for 99 runs. The former England fast bowler had revealed that Andrew Flintoff was not on the field when Sourav Ganguly was dismissed, but came running out of the toilet to abuse the former India captain. Flintoff came on the field and said some abuses to Ganguly, when the former captain was returning after getting out.

Harmison had said on Brad Hogg’s show, “What was with Sourav? He wrongfully harassed people. People did not get the support of Sourav Ganguly. I remember I was playing my debut match and I got him out for 99 in the first ball of an over. Andrew Flintoff just went to the toilet. But as soon as he saw Ganguly going back after getting out, Freddy (Flintoff) literally ran from the toilet to abuse him. Then Ganguly and Flintoff had abused each other. Ganguly is a lovely person, but there was something about Sourav Ganguly that people were not with him.

Let us tell you that after his team’s thrilling victory against India, Flintoff took off his shirt and celebrated at the Wankhede Stadium. In 2002, Ganguly took off his shirt and waved it in the Lord’s balcony after India defeated England in the final of the NatWest Trophy. This memorable victory and Sourav Ganguly’s shirtless celebration is still fresh in people’s minds.
