Sarandeep Singh and Abhay Sharma in race for coach
Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament will be organized from October 11

New Delhi. Only a few weeks are left for the domestic cricket tournament to start in India. In the absence of big names, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is yet to appoint a head coach for its senior team. DDCA’s trouble has also increased because there is no big name in this post except former India off-spinner Sarandeep Singh and former fielding coach of Indian women’s team Abhay Sharma. It is understood that apart from these two, some other names are in this race but there is no known name.

A DDCA official said on the condition of anonymity, “Look, DDCA has invited applications for the post of head coach and it is absolutely right. But if you want to see the big names who have proved themselves in this list, then you (DDCA) will also have to try for this. In such a situation, you cannot sit comfortably and expect them to apply. You (top officials of DDCA) need to approach them and make an offer which they could not refuse.

Many changes in Team India’s playing XI, will India get the advantage of fielding first?

The domestic season at the senior level will start from October 11 with the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. In such a situation, the new coach will have very little time to understand and test the team. “If Chandrakant Pandit is associated with Madhya Pradesh, it is because he had planned months before the session and pushed to get his services,” he said.

This official said, “We have to understand that a good coach understands his worth and will never apply on his own. Hope anyone selected by the CAC (Cricket Advisory Committee of Nikhil Chopra, Reema Malhotra and Gursharan Singh) will do a good job.

Former national selector Gagan Khoda, who played a few ODIs for India in the 1998-99 season, is a strong contender to be the chief selector of the Delhi senior team. Khoda has played 132 first-class matches for Rajasthan and Central Zone, but being a Delhi domicile (domicile eligibility criteria), he is in the race. “Out of all the applications we have received, only Gagan’s (Khoda) application is strong and as far as the post of chairman (selection committee) is concerned, he is very much ahead in the race at this point of time,” he said.
