Will Asia Cup 2023 be held in Pakistan or not? Decision will be taken tomorrow, emergency meeting called

New Delhi. The fate of Pakistan hosting the 2023 Asia Cup will be decided at an emergency meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) convened in Bahrain on Saturday (February 4) at the request of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi. The PCB had last year expressed displeasure over ACC President and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s statement that the Indian team would not go to Pakistan for the Asia Cup and the tournament would be held at a neutral venue. Rameez Raja, who was the chairman of PCB at that time, had even threatened to boycott the ODI World Cup to be held in India this year if this happened.

According to a source in news agency ANI, “The newly elected PCB chief Najam Sethi wants an emergency meeting with the ACC chief and members and expressed this desire to the ACC members during the ILT20 opening ceremony in Dubai. Now the emergency meeting of ACC will be held in Bahrain and the main agenda of the meeting is to decide the fate of 2023 Asia Cup, whether it will be held in Pakistan or not. Most likely in this meeting, Asia Cup 2023 will be held in some other country instead of Pakistan.

Last year the Asia Cup was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and once again the UAE can host the Asia Cup. Qatar has also shown interest in hosting the tournament as a neutral venue amid political tensions between the neighboring countries. Qatar has also hosted some cricket tournaments and franchise based cricket leagues in the past. Now everyone’s eyes are fixed on tomorrow’s meeting, in which the situation regarding the hosting of 2023 Asia Cup will be cleared.

On the other hand, Najam Sethi will try to ensure that his hosting rights remain intact. Along with this, PCB and BCCI will also be at loggerheads over their disagreement regarding the ACC calendar released by Jay Shah in Bahrain. Let us tell you that some time ago Jai Shah had released a calendar of ACC tournaments, which was called one-sided by the PCB. PCB had said that this calendar has been prepared without their advice. ACC President Jay Shah released this calendar on 5 January.

Najam Sethi had said on ESPNcricinfo, “There has been no meeting of the ACC Board for some time and a lot of decisions are being taken. We have challenged one of them. Now the good news is that we managed to persuade him to have a board meeting and I will attend it.”
