936.44 crore penalty on Google, Competition Commission of India fined for the second time in a week

CCI Penalty On Google: The Competition Commission of India has once again imposed a fine of Rs 936.44 crore on Google. CCI has imposed this fine on Google for misusing its position in Play Store policies and for anti-competitive practice. Last week itself, in another case, the CCI imposed a fine of Rs 1,337.76 crore on Google. This is the second time in a week that Google has been fined.

The CCI in its investigation found that Google dominates the Android Smart Mobile OS and OS for smart mobile devices in the App Store market in India. Google’s Play Store policy requires app developers to use the Google Play Billing System (GPBS). If app developers don’t follow Google’s policy of using GPBS, they can’t keep their apps on the Play Store, thus losing out on a large customer base in the form of Android users. The CCI has also probed allegations of Google keeping rival UPI apps out of payment options. After investigating these things, the CCI has found allegations of infringement on Google.

CCI has warned Google not to abuse anti-competitive practices. The CCI has said that Google cannot prevent any app developers from using third party payment processes. Also, now Google cannot discriminate in any way with the apps that provide payment facility through UPI in India.

The CCI said that a number of discrepancies have been found in the presentation of revenue data of Google. After which the CCI has decided to levy a penalty of Rs 936.44 crore on the provisional turnover of Google at the rate of 7%. Google has been given 30 days to provide the financial details and related documents to Google.
