Hyundai prepares to double sales of Verna, Honda City will get tough competition

New Delhi. The All New Hyundai Verna recently made its India debut. Prices for the midsize sedan start from Rs. 10.90 lakhs and go up to Rs. 17.38 lakhs for the fully loaded variant (ex-showroom, Delhi). It now comes with four petrol-only powertrain options and ADAS features.

The Korean carmaker is aiming to double the sales of the Verna with its new-generation model and grab segment leadership from long-time Japanese rival Honda City. Hyundai claims that it has received over 8,000 bookings for the sixth generation Verna since the bookings started on February 13.

cell doubling preparation
Unveiling the new Verna, Hyundai Motor India COO Tarun Garg said, “We are looking to double the volumes for this new generation car. We are extremely bullish about the potential in the car and sedan segment of India, despite the focus on SUVs over the past few years. Hyundai Motor India sold over 19,000 units of the outgoing Verna in CY2022, and with its plans to double the sales, the company will aim to sell around 36,000 to 38,000 units annually.

City will get tough competition
This is yet another attempt by Hyundai to dislodge the Honda City from its leadership position. In the past too, the company had its eye on the No.1 position, but after the initial euphoria of a new Hyundai product, the City has always emerged as the segment champion. The all-new Verna is positioned right in the middle of the 1-1.25-lakh-unit midsize sedan segment, which has received some encouraging response along with the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus. Honda Cars India also updated the City sedan at the beginning of the month to maintain its strong hold in the segment.

While the company is clocking an average monthly sale of 1,500 units, if it manages to double the targeted volume, the new Hyundai Verna could overtake the Honda City’s sales as far as standout features are concerned. Like Verna also comes with Level-2 ADAS. Other key safety features include six airbags for all passengers and three-point seatbelts.
