New Delhi. MG Motor India has confirmed that the company will launch a new car mass market electric car in India in the second quarter of 2023. It is believed that this model could be the MG City EV. The starting price of this small electric car can be around Rs 11 lakh. At the same time, the price of the top model of the car can be close to 15 lakhs.
In India, this car will compete directly with the Tata Tiago. Tata’s Tiago is currently the cheapest EV in India. The starting price of which is Rs 8.49 lakh, while the top model is Rs 17.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Rajiv Chaba, President and Managing Director, MG Motor India has revealed that the company will source the batteries for its mass-market EVs from local vendors to achieve competitive pricing. The automaker aims to create affordable options for its Indian EV buyers.

Manufacturing in Gujarat
Under its MGDAP (MG Developer Program), the British automaker is collaborating with tech start-ups to develop battery chemistry and charging solutions for the local market. The automaker expects its new MG City EV to generate “good volumes”. The company’s production center will be in Gujarat.

Preparing to increase production
The automaker aims to increase the production of MG ZS EV from 300-350 units to 500 units per month. It will increase the production of MG Hector from 2000 units to 4000 units on monthly basis by January 2023. By the end of this calendar year, MG Motor India will register sales of 55,000 – 56,000 units. It aims to double its sales in 2023. Talking about the upcoming MG electric car, this model will be based on the China-spec Wuling Air EV. It can deliver close to 40bhp of power with a battery capacity of around 20kWh – 25kWh. Its range will be around 150 km in rear world condition.
