OBD 2 Scanner: From April 1, 2023, changes have been made in many rules and standards related to vehicles in India. Now the vehicles will have to follow the more stringent BS-6 Phase 2 Emission Norms. The biggest change under the new norms, which came into effect from April 1, has been made regarding the Real Driving Emission Norms i.e. RDE.

In the first phase of BS-VI, the emission level of the vehicles is determined by testing them only in the lab. But now as per the new rules, vehicles will have to comply with the prescribed emission limits even in real time driving conditions. What is the work of OBD 2 scanner in vehicles?
OBD stands for On-Board Diagnostic. As the name suggests, it is a diagnostic device, which detects the problem going on inside the car or bike just like doctors detect the problem going on in the human body. OBD specifically takes information from the ECU (Engine Control Unit) of the vehicle.

Although now OBD scanner is being given in new vehicles, but this device was not given in old vehicles. Anyone can get information about the health of their vehicle from OBD device. It has been made mandatory to install this device in all vehicles sold from 1 April 2023.

How does this device work
OBD scanner is installed in the socket provided near the fuse box, this socket is different in every vehicle. Different types of devices come to read data from OBD scanner. Some OBD connects to the phone via Bluetooth, while some also support Wi-Fi.

You will be able to find out vehicle information such as speed, acceleration, trip, mileage, coolant temperature or fault in any part of the vehicle on whichever reading unit the OBD device is connected to. Real time emissions of the vehicle can also be detected through OBD 2 scanner. As soon as any fault occurs, its information will be available in real time, and you will be able to get it rectified yourself or by visiting the service center.

This device can also be installed in old vehicles
You can also install OBD device in old vehicle. It is also worth noting that this device does not work in cars before the year 2010. Even if there is a port in it, OBD will not support it. You will find OBD scanners for different vehicles in the market for 500 to 1500 rupees.
