Petrol Diesel Demand: Petrol-diesel demand reached a four-month high in October, know the reason

Petrol Diesel Demand: Due to the festive season in the country, the sale of petrol and diesel reached a four-month high in the month of October. This information has been received from the preliminary data of the industry on Tuesday. According to the data, petrol sales grew by 12.1 per cent to 27.8 lakh tonnes in October as compared to 2.48 lakh tonnes in the same month last year. Sales were 16.6 per cent higher as compared to October, 2020 and 21.4 per cent higher than pre-pandemic i.e. October- 2019.

Highest demand since June
The demand for this fuel declined by 1.9 per cent in September 2022 on a month-on-month basis. On a monthly basis, the demand in October was higher by 4.8 per cent. Petrol and diesel sales in October were the highest since June.

Diesel sales up 12%
At the same time, the sale of diesel, the most used fuel in the country, increased by 12 per cent to 65.7 lakh tonnes last month. Diesel consumption was 6.5 per cent higher as compared to October, 2020 while it is 13.6 per cent higher as compared to October, 2019. In August, the demand for diesel on a month-on-month basis declined by about five per cent as compared to July. In October, the demand for diesel grew by 9.7 per cent on a month-on-month basis.

What is the reason behind increasing demand for diesel
Industry sources said the end of the extended monsoon in most parts of the country and a pick-up in agricultural activities have led to an increase in the demand for diesel. The sowing of the Rabi crop as well as the festive season spurred economic activity and increased demand.

Big increase in demand for ATF
Vehicle fuel sales declined in July and August due to monsoon and lower demand. But as soon as the aviation sector opened, the number of passengers at airports reached pre-Covid levels. Due to this, the demand for aircraft fuel (ATF) increased by 26.4 per cent to 5.68 lakh tonnes during October. It is 65.8 percent higher than October, 2020, but 14 percent less than pre-Covid i.e. October, 2019.

Although the sale of LPG decreased
According to the data, LPG sales in October declined by 1.27 per cent year-on-year to 24.4 lakh tonnes. Consumption of LPG is 1.3 percent higher than October, 2020 and 5.2 percent higher than October, 2019. LPG consumption on a monthly basis has been lower as compared to 24.8 lakh tonnes in September.
