Dubai: The United Nations (UN) has taken seriously the deadly attack on Afghan civilians near the border with Iran. A UN expert has called for an investigation into reports that Afghan civilians have been killed and injured in an attack by Iranian security forces on the Afghan border. Iran has denied any firing incident near Saravan on Sunday. The area is a city in the country’s restive south-eastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan, which lies on the border with Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.

However, anti-Afghan migrant rhetoric has increased in Iran in recent months as Western sanctions hit its economy. Iran’s police chief meanwhile has also claimed that about 2 million migrants will be deported in the next six months. After this, Taliban said on Thursday that they will give information in this regard after the investigation of the alleged attack is completed. Their chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid had earlier said that rumors of deaths and injuries of Afghan civilians were spreading on the Iran border. “The incident has not been confirmed yet,” he said in a post on ‘X’. Necessary decision will be taken after the matter is confirmed.

UN will conduct investigation

Halwash is an advocacy group for the Baloch people that focuses primarily on Iran. Halwash has issued several reports on the shooting. These cited two unnamed witnesses to the attack and others claimed the death toll was at least dozens and many were injured. Halvash alleged that Iranian security forces used both firearms and rockets in the attack. Richard Bennett, the UN special envoy for human rights in Afghanistan, called for an investigation into the reports, saying he was “deeply concerned.”

“I appeal to the authorities to conduct the investigation in a transparent manner,” he said in a post on X. There is an urgent need to clarify the situation.” The UN refugee agency estimates that 3.8 million displaced people live in Iran, the majority of whom are Afghans. Some people in Iran believe the number of Afghans is even higher. (AP)
