New York: The US has presented the much-awaited reform proposal in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which India has been demanding for a long time. Let us tell you that the US has supported this new reform proposal to make India a permanent member of the UNSC. Along with this, it has also reiterated its “long-term support” for giving permanent membership to Japan and Germany in the Security Council. The US has presented this proposal just a few days before the global leaders gather in New York for the historic summit and high-level programs of the United Nations General Assembly. China will definitely be restless after the US supports India’s permanent membership. Let us tell you that China has been creating obstacles from the beginning in India becoming a permanent member at any cost.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said on Thursday that the US supports giving temporary membership to African countries in the Security Council as well as making two African countries permanent members. During a discussion on the topic ‘Future of Multilateralism and UN Reform’ at the Council of Foreign Relations event, she also announced that the US supports creating a new seat in the Security Council for small island developing countries. During the conversation, when she was asked what the US’s long-term support for making India, Germany and Japan permanent members means, she said, “As far as the G4 is concerned, we have expressed our support for Japan, Germany and India. Clear support was expressed for Brazil.”
America said- there is no basis to deny permanent membership to India
The G4 includes Brazil, Germany, India and Japan. The four countries support each other’s claims for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council. Thomas-Greenfield said, “India is the most populous country in the world, and we really strongly support its inclusion in the Council. I think there is no basis to deny membership to India, but there will be people who will oppose different countries for various reasons. We will also talk about this during the talks to be held further.”
What is America’s opinion on African countries
Regarding Africa, she said that three African countries are temporary members of the Security Council and African countries do not get the full opportunity to present their views and raise their voice. Thomas-Greenfield said, “That is why the US supports the creation of two permanent seats for African countries in the Security Council in addition to temporary membership.” She said, “Our African partners want this, and we believe it is fair.
