Washington: India has also got the support of the US against the attacks on Hindus and minorities that continued in Dhaka during and after the coup of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. US President Joe Biden has expressed shared concerns with PM Modi on a phone call on this issue. The White House has said that US President Joe Biden expressed his concern about the safety of people in Bangladesh and the future of democratic institutions there in a phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week.
Before Biden, Prime Minister Modi had called the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, and asked him to ensure the safety of Hindus and other minorities. Now White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby told a press conference that during the call with PM Modi, President Biden and the Prime Minister of India shared joint “concerns” over the recent developments in Bangladesh.
There was talk on the issue of Bangladesh
Responding to a question, John Kirby said, “I mean the President has made clear his continued concerns about the safety of Hindus and minorities in Bangladesh and the future of their democratic institutions.” Biden spoke to PM Modi on phone on August 26. After this, there was no mention of Bangladesh in the statement issued by the White House. However, a post on X by PM Modi and a statement issued by his office mentioned that Bangladesh was discussed during the telephone conversation.
Concern over the situation in Bangladesh and attacks on Hindus
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said- Both the leaders had expressed shared concern over the situation in Bangladesh. They had stressed on the restoration of law and order in Bangladesh and ensuring the safety of minorities, especially Hindus. In his post on X, PM Modi had said, “We also discussed the situation in Bangladesh and emphasized the need for early restoration of normalcy and ensuring the safety of minorities, especially Hindus in Bangladesh.” (Input-PTI)
