Dhaka: Bangladesh’s interim government has decided to set up a foundation to take care of the families of those killed and injured who took part in the unprecedented protests that swept the country and led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. More than 600 people, including 44 policemen, have been killed since massive protests were launched by students in July against a controversial reservation system in government jobs.
Muhammad Yunus will lead the foundation
Following massive student protests, Hasina was forced to resign on August 5 and left for India. Yunus (84) was sworn in as the chief adviser of the interim government on August 8. “The chief adviser will head the Professor Muhammad Yunus Foundation, which will include an adviser to the interim government, student representatives and family members of the deceased and injured,” state news agency Bangladesh Sanghabad Sanstha (BSS) said, citing a press release from the press cell of Yunus’ office.
‘Can’t forget your contribution’
“We can never forget the contribution of the students and people who sacrificed their lives and who were seriously injured while participating in demonstrations against the dictatorship,” Yunus said. “It is my duty and our national duty to stand with them. We will do whatever is necessary to take good care of the families of the deceased and the injured as soon as possible,” he said.
