Bangladesh Ban On Chhatra League: Demonstrations have started once again in Bangladesh. A major political decision has been taken in Bangladesh amid the protests. Giving a big blow to Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League, the interim government has banned the student wing ‘Bangladesh Student League’. The interim government working under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus announced this by issuing a gazette on Wednesday. ‘Student League’ has been banned under the provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009.

Know what was said?

According to the Home Ministry’s notification, Bangladesh Student League has been found to be involved in activities that pose a threat to public safety. These activities include serious criminal activities like murder, torture, harassment on college campuses, seat trading in student dormitories, tender manipulation, rape and sexual harassment.

innocent people killed

The notification said there is ample evidence that the student organization has been engaged in conspiracy and subversive activities against the state even after the fall of the Awami League government. It said that during the anti-discrimination movement, Bangladesh Student League leaders and activists attacked protesting students and the general public with weapons, killing hundreds of innocent people and endangering the lives of many more.

Bangladesh’s interim government has taken this decision at a time when protesters tried to storm the official residence of President Mohammad Shahabuddin and demanded him to step down over his remarks questioning Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. The decision to ban Awami League is likely to bring major changes in the politics of Bangladesh. Now the traces of Awami League are being erased here. Opponents have been accusing this organization of being involved in violent activities.

What did President Mohammad Shahabuddin say?

It should also be mentioned here that President Mohammad Shahabuddin had said in an interview with Bengali daily ‘Manab Zameen’ last week that he had no documentary evidence that Sheikh Hasina had organized mass protests led by students in August. Had resigned from the post of Prime Minister before leaving the country amid the protests. In protest against this, the protesters had tried to attack Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President and are demanding the resignation of Shahabuddin.
