Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday acquitted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supremo and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia Steel Mill corruption case. This decision of the court has removed a major legal obstacle in the way of Sharif leading his party in the upcoming elections. Sharif, 73, was sentenced to seven years in jail by an anti-corruption court in December 2018 and imposed a heavy fine. The court did not accept Sharif’s plea that he had nothing to do with the steel mill established by his father in Saudi Arabia in 2001.

Sharif has already been acquitted in Avenfield case

Let us inform that the PML-N Chief was already acquitted in the Avenfield case, in which he was convicted in July 2018 and sentenced to 10 years in jail. He also got relief in another corruption case in which he was acquitted by the court in 2018, but the acquittal was challenged by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the Islamabad High Court. A bench of Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb heard the appeal against his conviction by an anti-corruption court in 2018 in a case registered by national accountability watchdog NAB.

‘Tell us what evidence you have?’

The bench said, ‘The prosecution could not present even a single evidence. Therefore, the burden of proof cannot be placed on the accused. The Chief Justice asked why the NAB prosecutor failed to produce evidence. He said, ‘You were a prosecutor. Tell us what evidence you have? Tell us on what basis you put the burden of proof on the accused. NAB requested to send the case back to the lower court for rehearing but the court rejected it. The former Prime Minister was present at the time of the hearing. The same bench had on November 29 acquitted Sharif in the Avenfield corruption case.

Sharif has been the Prime Minister of Pakistan thrice

With this decision of the court, Sharif has been acquitted in all 3 cases, which include Avenfield case, Flagship case and Al-Azizia case. Sharif was living in exile in Saudi Arabia when the mill was established after former military ruler Pervez Musharraf toppled Sharif’s government in 1999 and deported his family. Sharif’s son Hussain Nawaz was the administrative head of the mill. Sharif is the only Pakistani politician to have become the country’s Prime Minister for a record 3 times. He returned to the country in October to lead his party in general elections scheduled for February 2024. (Language)
