Tehran: A bus carrying Shia pilgrims from Pakistan to Iraq crashed in central Iran on late Tuesday night. Officials said on Wednesday that at least 28 pilgrims were killed and 23 others were injured in the accident. Iran’s state news agency IRNA quoted local emergency services official Mohammad Ali Malakzadeh as saying that the accident occurred late Tuesday night in Yazd province of central Iran. According to Malakzadeh, 23 pilgrims were injured in the accident, 14 of them seriously.

There were 51 people on the bus

Emergency services official Mohammad Ali Malakzadeh said 51 people were on board the bus when the accident occurred. The pilgrims were travelling to Iraq for Arbaeen, a ritual held on the 40th day of the martyrdom of a Shia prophet in the seventh century.

Pilgrims visit Iraq in large numbers

Let us tell you that there is a large number of Shias in Pakistan. Shia pilgrims choose the route of Iran to go to Iraq. Every year lakhs of Shias go to Karbala for Arbaeen, a ritual held to commemorate the 40th day of Imam Hussain’s martyrdom. It is also worth noting that this accident has put Iran’s road safety in the dock. On an average, 17,000 people die every year in road accidents in the country. (AP)
