Canada has changed the rules of recruitment in the army, permanent citizens of Indian origin will also get a chance

Canadian Miltary: Citizens of Indian origin will also be able to join the Canadian Army. The Government of Canada has recently announced that people who have permanent resident status in their country can now join the army. Significantly, a large number of people of Indian origin live in Canada. After this announcement of Canada, now the way will be clear for people of Indian origin to join the Canadian Army. The Canadian Forces is struggling to recruit new members to fill thousands of vacancies.

Lack of recruitment on vacant posts in the army

According to the Royal United Services Institute of Nova Scotia, a non-profit organization, permanent residents were previously eligible only under the Skilled Military Foreign Applicant (SMFA) admission program. In this, such persons were recruited, due to which the training cost was reduced or some special work was completed, such as trained pilots or doctors. Women make up 16.3 per cent of the Canadian military, 2.7 per cent of local residents, minorities make up less than 12 per cent of the Canadian military. White men make up three-quarters of the ranks in the Canadian military.

CIC News reported that the Department of National Defense (DND) may make a formal announcement in the coming days regarding the change in policy. Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said in March that the CAF needed to be increased amid the changing global geopolitical situation due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In September, the CAF had expressed concern over the acute shortage of recruitments to fill thousands of vacancies in the army.

Changes in the old recruitment process

Recently, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced that they are changing their old recruitment process to allow permanent residents who have lived in Canada for 10 years to apply. The shortfall has been made more acute by the gradual increase in the number of deaths and Canada’s relatively low fertility levels. In such circumstances, immigrants become prime candidates for the military because they usually arrive in Canada during their younger working age years.

The growing number of immigrants in the Canadian population

There were more than eight million immigrants with permanent residency in Canada by 2021, which was about 21.5 percent of the total Canadian population. In the same year, nearly 100,000 Indians became permanent residents of Canada as the country granted permanent citizenship to a record 405,000 new immigrants in its history.

According to statistics, Canada is expected to add more than one million new permanent residents between 2022 and 2024, vastly expanding the pool of candidates the military can choose.
