In a tweet, the consulate said, “We strongly condemn the heinous crime of vandalizing the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the pioneer of peace.” “Canadian authorities are requested to investigate the matter immediately and bring the perpetrators to justice at the earliest,” the statement said. The incident comes after Khalistan supporters defaced and spray-painted a statue of Mahatma Gandhi near City Hall in Hamilton city of Ontario province, Canada on March 23.

In July last year, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi installed outside a Vishnu temple in Richmond Hill, Canada was vandalised, which was strongly condemned by the Consulate General of India in Toronto. Canada has recently seen an increase in anti-India activities by Khalistan supporters who have vandalized some Hindu temples. A Ram temple in Mississauga was defaced with anti-India graffiti on February 13 by “Khalistani extremists”. This drew a strong reaction from the Indian Consulate in Toronto.
Attacks on the rise in Canada
On March 23, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalized in Hamilton, Ontario. Slogans in support of Khalistan and anti-India words were written on this statue. The incident in Hamilton was termed as a hate crime by the police. Attacks by Khalistan supporters on Indian establishments and temples in Canada are increasing. The country of North America, Canada is the place where the population of Indians is considerable.
