Baltimore Bridge Accident

Baltimore Bridge Collapse Case: The US Justice Department on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against the owner and manager of the cargo ship responsible for the Baltimore bridge accident. The department has demanded US $ 100 million in damages from the company which it had to spend to remove debris from the water and reopen the port. The lawsuit filed in Maryland alleges that the ship ‘Dali’ had not properly maintained electrical and mechanical systems, due to which it collided with the pillar of the bridge on Francis Scott in March this year.

accident could have been avoided

“This accident was entirely avoidable,” the lawsuit said, adding that commercial activity at the Port of Baltimore was disrupted for months before the port was fully reopened in June. “The Department of Justice is working to ensure that the costs of clearing the channel and reopening the Port of Baltimore are borne by the companies that caused the accident, not by American taxpayers,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a written statement.

The ship was going from Baltimore to Sri Lanka

The suit has been filed against the ship’s owner Grace Ocean Private Limited and manager Synergy Marine Group, both operating from Singapore. The companies had filed a petition a few days after the accident requesting to limit their legal liability. The ship was going from Baltimore to Sri Lanka when some of its systems stopped working due to a power supply disruption and the ship collided with a pillar of the bridge. Due to this the bridge collapsed. At the time of the accident, six people working on road repairs on the bridge were killed. (AP)
