Flood in Bangladesh: While Bangladesh is trying to recover from the political crisis, floods have wreaked havoc here. Due to continuous rains and rising rivers, many areas of Bangladesh are in the grip of floods. 20 people have died due to the floods while more than 50 lakh people are affected. Life has been disrupted due to the floods, people are not even able to get food and clean water. Highways and railway lines between the capital Dhaka and the main port city Chittagong have been damaged, making it difficult to reach the badly flooded areas.
What did Mohammad Yunus say?
The worst affected areas due to floods include Cox’s Bazar, where about 1 million Rohingya refugees from neighboring Myanmar have made their home. Meanwhile, Bangladesh government head Mohammad Yunus said in a televised address that the administration has taken all necessary measures to ensure return to normalcy for flood victims. He said that we have started discussions with neighboring countries to prevent flood situations in future.
Things can get scary
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has warned that the flood situation could worsen if monsoon rains continue. Officials say that more than four lakh people have taken shelter in about 3,500 relief camps in 11 flood-affected districts. About 750 medical teams are present for treatment in the relief camps. Army, Air Force, Navy and Border Guard Bangladesh are assisting in rescue operations.

Rain causes destruction every year
Farmer Abdul Halim (65) in a village in Comilla district said floodwaters swept away his hut at midnight. He said there were no belongings left and no drinking water. Hardly anyone has brought relief aid inside the villages. It is also worth noting that Bangladesh is surrounded by hundreds of rivers and has witnessed floods many times in recent decades.
