Philippines Floods

Manila: Heavy rains have occurred in northern Philippines after a mild storm. Due to heavy rains, many areas were flooded and officials closed schools. Government work has also had to be suspended due to the floods. Meanwhile, thousands of people living on the banks of the Marikina River have also been warned to be ready to leave their villages due to the possibility of floods. According to the Weather Bureau, tropical storm ‘Yagi’ hit the coast of Vinzons city in Camarines Norte province, southeast of Manila on Monday with sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour and its speed reached 90 kilometers per hour.

Risk of floods and landslides

The storm, known locally as Enteng, was moving northwest at 10 kilometers per hour near the east coast of Luzon’s main northern region, where the weather bureau warned of flash floods and landslides in mountainous provinces. A local resident was killed by electrocution in Naga town in eastern Camarines Sur province, police said. Authorities were trying to confirm whether the incident was weather-related. Floodwaters inundated several places in the region.

Warning given to people

A typhoon warning was issued for much of Luzon, the country’s most populous region, including Manila. Schools at all levels and most government offices were closed here because of the stormy weather. A siren sounded at dawn along the crowded banks of the Marikina River on the eastern edge of the capital, warning thousands of people to be ready to evacuate in case the river’s water level rose and the river swelled due to heavy rains.

Dozens of flights postponed

Coast guard personnel in northern Samar province on Sunday rescued 40 villagers from two villages submerged in waist-deep water, the coast guard said. Sea travel was temporarily suspended at several ports affected by the typhoon, leaving about 2,400 passengers and cargo crews stranded. Nearly two dozen domestic flights were canceled because of the stormy weather. (AP)
