What causes landslides?
Landslides occur when the pull of gravity exceeds the strength of the geomaterial that makes up the slope of a hill or mountain. The geomaterial can be a variety of materials such as rocks, sand, silt and clay. Then some portion of this slope begins to slide downhill. Depending on how steep the slope is, the volume of material sliding down can range from just a few cubic metres to millions of cubic metres. (Language)
