Former Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif claimed on Wednesday that the unprecedented violence, including attacks on key military installations, following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in May was an attempt to remove Army Chief General Asim Munir from the post. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party president made the remarks while addressing reporters after appearing before the accountability court here in a corruption case.

Sharif made a veiled attack on Khan, the 71-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chairman who is jailed for leaking classified documents in an alleged conspiracy to remove the current army chief from the post on May 9. Said that the architects of the unprecedented attacks are ‘enemies of the country’. Sharif (72) said, “An attempt was made to overthrow the army chief on May 9.” No one, be it a democracy or a dictator, tolerates treason, that is why action is being taken against the culprits of May 9.

Called Imran an enemy of the country

Shehbaz Sharif said that no concessions should be given to the architects of May 9 as they are ‘enemies of the country’. Following Khan’s arrest in an alleged corruption case in early May this year, thousands of PTI supporters attacked military and government establishments across the country. Subsequently, the police arrested more than 10,000 party leaders and workers, who have been in jail since then. The Army also took action against more than a dozen high-ranking officers for being part of a conspiracy to remove General Munir from the post. (Language)
