Security After Lebanon Pager Blast
Taipei: While the war between Israel and Hamas continues, the tension in the Middle East has taken a major turn. Explosions have taken place in pagers used to send messages in many places in Syria including Lebanon’s capital Beirut. After the blasts, Taiwanese company Gold Apollo, which manufactures pagers, has made a big statement on Wednesday. The Taiwanese company has said that another company in Budapest has manufactured these pagers, to which they had given the right to use their authorized brand on the pagers. There were simultaneous explosions in pagers in Lebanon and Syria on Tuesday, in which at least nine people, including an eight-year-old girl, died and about 3,000 people were injured. Meanwhile, an American official, on the condition of anonymity, said that Israel had informed the US after the operation was over. A small amount of explosives was hidden in the pager and then it was exploded.
What did the company say?
According to a statement issued by Gold Apollo on Wednesday, the AR-924 pager was manufactured by BAC Consulting Kft., which is based in the Hungarian capital. “According to the cooperation agreement, we gave BAC the right to use our brand trademark for the sale of the product in the specified territories (Lebanon and Syria), but BAC alone is responsible for the manufacture of the product,” the statement said. Gold Apollo Chairman Su Ching-kuang told reporters on Wednesday that his company has had a licensing agreement with BAC for the past three years. However, he did not provide evidence of the contract.

On Tuesday, while people were shopping in shops, sitting inside cafes or travelling in cars and motorcycles, the pagers in their hands or pockets started heating up and exploded. After this incident, blood was seen everywhere and people around were in panic. It appears that most of the injured in the attack were Hezbollah members, but it was not immediately clear whether any non-Hezbollah member also had these explosive pagers.

‘Attacks on Israel will continue’
According to Lebanese security officials and a Hezbollah official, the explosions occurred mainly in areas where the group is considered to have a strong presence, particularly in Beirut and the Bekaa region of eastern Lebanon, as well as in Damascus. The Hezbollah official gave this information on condition of anonymity. Hezbollah has blamed Israel for this attack. It said in a statement on Wednesday morning that it will continue its usual attacks against Israel as before, which it describes as an attack in support of its ally Hamas and the Palestinians in Gaza.

Lebanon’s Health Minister Firas Abiad said during a tour of hospitals Wednesday morning that many of the wounded suffered serious eye injuries and others had to have limbs amputated. Journalists were not allowed to enter hospital rooms or film the patients. The health minister said the wounded were admitted to all hospitals in the region so as not to overwhelm any one hospital. He said Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria and Egypt have offered to help treat the patients. An Iraqi military plane carrying medical equipment landed in Beirut on Wednesday, airport officials said. Abiad said the plane carried 15 tons of medicine and medical equipment. (AP)
